Consumer Price Transparency Threatens Localized Retail Prices, New Study Finds

Miami, FL — April 14, 2011

RSR Research’s latest report, “Optimizing Price in a Transparent World: Benchmark 2011,” RSR?s fourth annual benchmark on the topic, finds today?s retailer challenged by a sophisticated, price-sensitive consumer. As consumers research online for the best deals before leaving home or use their smart phones to find the lowest prices in stores, they are not only forcing more competitive behavior between retailers, they are exposing different prices by geography and channel within a retailer?s chain. Retailers? principle response to consumer price transparency has been to invest in more targeted promotions.

These findings are based on a survey of 68 retailers between December 2010 and March 2011. The report can be downloaded at http://www.retailsystemsresearch.com/_document/summary/1269. The report is sponsored by Revionics and SAS, and supported by Softechnics, a division of RedPrairie.

“Price transparency has become an overnight issue for retailers,” said Nikki Baird, Managing Partner at RSR Research and co-author of the report. “Four times as many retailers reported it as a business challenge this year over last year. When you couple that with consumer price sensitivity and increased price competitiveness in the industry overall, retailers are really struggling to avoid competing on price.?

“With commodity prices on the rise, retailers are going to be really challenged to raise prices as their own costs go up,” adds Paula Rosenblum, the report?s co-author. “What?s ironic is that while retailers acknowledge price sensitive consumers, they don?t ascribe it to anything in particular – they especially don?t seem to be aware of consumer price comparisons, whether online or in stores.”

“Optimizing Price in a Transparent World: Benchmark 2011″ contains analysis of the business drivers, opportunities, and organizational constraints surrounding pricing initiatives, as well as recommendations for creating successful pricing capabilities. The report is part of RSR Research’s ongoing efforts to provide market intelligence on retail technology trends, and can be downloaded here:

RedPrairie WMS integrates Build-To-Order features in new release : Current warehouse management system (WMS) version supports in-line sequencing and work order processing for seamless production and logistics

MILWAUKEE — August 12, 2008

The new WMS additions will allow several work orders to be allocated, scheduled and system-directed across multiple work stations. Labor standards, so successful in improving distribution workforce performance, have also been extended to the production line. These warehouse management system (WMS) enhancements will improve the efficiency, control and visibility of production work order processing.

“For manufacturers, supply chain management starts with the raw materials and components they receive from suppliers and continues all the way to the customer, sometimes extending to vendor-managed inventory at the customer site,” comments Tom Kozenski, RedPrairie vice president product strategy. “Manufacturers view this as one multi-step process which they want to support with a single integrated approach. Through this new WMS release, manufacturers for the first time have an integrated solution across these domains.”

RedPrairie’s Build-To-Order solution, in conjunction with the WMS, provides in-sequence parts and component delivery to production lines, error proofing and traceability, shop floor integration with material handling equipment, and outbound delivery sequencing. This bolsters warehouse management, reduces lead times and inventory costs, improves on-time delivery, and enhances lean manufacturing efforts.

The new WMS release also adds to the WMS’s vendor-managed inventory capabilities, improving visibility and control over inventory hand-off from supplier to customer. The new updates include support for the roll third party logistics providers often play in the process, tracking supplier information down to the item level, offering time-appropriate ownership transfer, and rules-based allocation algorithms by supplier.

Steve Banker, Service Director for Supply Chain Management at ARC Advisory Group, says, “We have seen the line between production and distribution operations blur over the past few years. What I find interesting about this release is that there is functionality typically found in a Production Management system, such as in-line sequencing, that can absolutely improve certain types of warehouse operations. Other functionality, such as Labor Management based on engineered standards, has far more typically been used in warehouse operations. But these functions can absolutely improve certain types of production operations. I applaud the cross fertilization, and the blurring of lines between Production and Warehouse Management systems.”

The new release of RedPrairie’s E2e? Supply Chain Execution suite and WMS is now available in general release.

RedPrairie WMS brings better visibility, efficiency and control to Yard Management through RFID : New WMS release supports use of RFID technology from check-in to check-out

RedPrairie WMS brings better visibility, efficiency and control to Yard Management through RFID : New WMS release supports use of RFID technology from check-in to check-out

MILWAUKEE — August 26, 2008

Tom Kozenski, RedPrairie vice president product strategy, comments, “Customers with hundreds of trailers in their yards found that even with previous generation yard management systems and RF technology, tracking and locating individual trailers for yard movements and audits was challenging, especially when you consider the impact of the weather elements. Those without system support were even worse off. But the ability of RFID technology to read all of the tags in a given area makes finding trailers and verifying movements a natural by-product of proximity to fixed or mobile readers. This makes yard management more accurate and efficient.”

With the new WMS Yard management release, RFID readers at gates read passive RFID tags on trailers as they enter or leave the yard to verify and record their presence on-site. Fixed zone readers or mobile readers can be used to locate trailers within the yard, confirm trailer movements, and support yard audits. Built-in Event Management capabilities in the WMS can alert managers and initiate resolution to exceptions uncovered by the RFID reads.

The RFID-enablement of Yard management is contained in RedPrairie’s latest release of its industry-leading Warehouse Management solution (WMS). RedPrairie was a pioneer in integrating RFID technology into warehouse management operations and its WMS five years ago and continues to find new ways to leverage this technology to streamline distribution and provide efficient asset management.
